The Weight of Visibility: Queer Filipino Identity Abroad
Part One of a Three-Part Pride Month Series
This Pride Month, In The Mix Magazine presents the first installment of a special three-part series exploring the lives, struggles, and triumphs of LGBTQ+ Filipinos around the world. In The Weight of Visibility, Chris Sta. Brigida-Kopp founder of Filipino LGBT Europe reflects on growing up Filipino, queer, and navigating identity across borders. Moving beyond celebration and symbolism, the story examines the quiet negotiations of belonging, family, culture, migration, and self-acceptance that many LGBTQIA+ Filipinos continue to face. It is a powerful reminder that visibility is not simply about being seen. It is about having the freedom to live openly, honestly, and without fear.
From arriving in Italy with uncertainty and few guarantees to building four thriving Filipino bakeries in Milan, Romeo Mendoza's story is about far more than business. It is a journey of resilience, sacrifice, and reinvention.
What began as a struggle to survive evolved into something larger: bread became a bridge between homeland and diaspora, preserving familiar flavors while creating a sense of belonging for Filipinos far from home. Through decades of hard work, Mendoza transformed a humble craft into a thriving enterprise that feeds not only customers but also memories, traditions, and community. His story reveals how entrepreneurship, when rooted in service and cultural identity, can become a lifeline for an entire migrant community.

But in a twist of fate that made the moment even more magical, the venue was wrapped in a dreamy fog, turning their much-anticipated sunny ceremony into what KaladKaren lovingly called a “wedding in the clouds.” It was as if the heavens themselves came down to bless their union. Looking every bit the radiant bride, KaladKaren wore a stunning mermaid-cut gown designed by the talented Filipino designer Francis Libiran, effortlessly blending elegance and drama.
