For anyone who loves the mountains, this is a dream destination—whether you love to ski, explore new places or simply soak in the stunning alpine views. Nestled in the heart of the Dolomites, Cortina d'Ampezzo is a picturesque alpine town that beckons adventurers like me. Known for its stunning mountain vistas, world-class ski resorts, and charming Italian ambiance, Cortina offers a unique blend of outdoor excitement and refined relaxation.
In our trails and detours, let me recount my unforgettable journey to this renowned destination last fall, and Cortina proved to be a perfect escape as I immersed in the beauty of the Alps even just for a few days. Join me as I take you through the highlights of my unforgettable trip to this Italian gem.

The Hike to Lago di Sorapis: Easy and Hard at the Same Time
I've always been vocal about my love for the Dolomites, and a few years back, my friends and I set out to hike to Lake Sorapis. Since it is a really famous excursion and with the summer crowds and no parking in sight, we had to let it go.
Well, this time, I finally made it! This hike is one of those experiences that shifts between feeling effortless and challenging, depending on the moment—but every step was worth it.
The adventure started with a bit of a detour—we got on the wrong bus so we somehow got lost on our way to Passo Tre Croci, the official starting point. What was supposed to be a simple beginning turned into an unexpected one-to-two-hour walk just to find the trailhead. It was frustrating at first, but looking back, it added to the adventure.

Once on the right path, the hike started off gently, winding through forests and offering glimpses of the dramatic Dolomites. The route is well sign- posted so do not worry! As we climbed higher, the trail became more challenging—narrow sections, rocky paths, and even a few exposed areas with cables for support. While there’s a handrail for safety, the height and exposure can feel pretty intimidating—especially if you’re not a fan of heights. Just when our legs started to feel the effort, lo and behold we turned a corner and saw it: Lago di Sorapis, a surreal, frozen landscape.
During fall the water is not a vibrant turquoise but a glassy, ice-covered surface, reflecting the jagged peaks of the Dolomites. Truly beautiful! It was quite chilly when we got there so always pack a windbreaker because mountain weather is unpredictable! So we took a break, had our late lunch and soaked it all in, and appreciated the breathtaking view of the place.

Tucked away in the forests of Cortina, it felt like stepping into a secret world, far removed from the usual tourist spots.
There were only a few people when we got there. And the moment we arrived, I was struck by how peaceful it was—the still waters reflecting the towering Dolomites, the crisp mountain air, and the quiet rustling of the trees.
We took our time strolling along the shore, soaking in the tranquility. At one point, we found a couple of perfect little spots to sit and just admire the view, letting the calmness of the lake wash over us.
There was even a charming lakeside restaurant where we initially considered having lunch, but after glancing at the menu, we decided to pass—it was a little beyond our budget.
