Venazir Martinez: A Visionary Artist Redefining Creativity and Leadership

Venazir Martinez is a passionate and dedicated artist whose work has made a significant impact in the arts and culture scene. Recognized with the prestigious TOYM (The Outstanding Young Men) Award, she has demonstrated exceptional talent and commitment to the arts, using her creativity to address societal issues and inspire change. Throughout her journey, she has faced numerous challenges, but her perseverance and belief in the power of art have driven her to break barriers and redefine leadership and success

in the creative industry. 

Venazir’s work reflects her deep connection to culture, purpose, and a desire to empower others through artistic expression. She continues to inspire young Filipinos to pursue their dreams and make a meaningful impact in their communities.

Her journey in the arts began with a singular, seemingly impossible goal: to create the largest and most extensive tapestry of Filipino-themed murals in the world. While she hasn’t fully achieved this vision yet, she remains confident that she will. The idea for this project, which she calls "the red thread," is what has guided her. No matter the obstacles she faces or how long it takes, Venazir trusts in herself and in the support of the people who believe in her. 

She also views this mission as more than just a personal challenge—it’s a way to show the world that being Filipino is something to take immense pride in.

Receiving the TOYM Award was a profound moment for Venazir, but she doesn’t view it as a crown. Instead, it serves as a badge of responsibility.

“It reminds me to always look back at my roots and remember those who saw potential in me long before I could fully recognize it myself”.

The question, "How will you use your talent to serve others?" lies at the heart of what the TOYM Award represents. Venazir has always believed in the value of what she does, even when others might not immediately recognize it. For her, it’s not about seeking validation but about making a positive impact on herself and her community.

The road to pursuing her passion has not been without its struggles. One of the hardest realities for an artist is the constant balancing act between following one’s dreams and managing practicalities, such as paying the bills. 

At times, Venazir found herself engaging in work that didn’t align with her true passion just to make ends meet. It’s easy to feel frustrated when not seeing one's authentic self reflected in the work. Artists, in particular, can be their own harshest critics, and overcoming this negativity can be difficult.

Venazir has found that overcoming these emotions is often about reaching out and verbalizing them with people she trusts. Relying on the support of others is something she has learned to embrace over time. 

She used to view asking for help as a weakness but now sees it as a blessing in disguise. These moments, when she felt at her lowest, were essential for her spiritual and personal growth. 

They taught her humility and the importance of gratitude, reminding her that one day, she would pay that kindness forward—not necessarily to the same people, but to others.

One of the most significant decisions Venazir made was to leave home and explore the world, a choice that came with its own set of challenges. Feelings of homesickness and extreme depression often took a toll on her, but she always tried to focus on the bigger picture: this is the price of pursuing her dreams. It’s tough to accept that one may have to endure hardships for many years before 

proving to oneself that reaching dreams is possible. But it’s all part of the journey.

Through her experiences, she has learned that if a person has confidence and respect for themselves, everything positive they do can create an inexplicable force that the world mirrors back to them. The best way to inspire others is to lead by example. By being kind, pursuing passions with integrity, and doing one’s best in everything life presents, people will naturally follow.

Venazir’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the pursuit of dreams despite numerous challenges. Her work continues to inspire others to embrace their own creative potential and redefine leadership through the power of art and service to others.

Dr. Melvin J. Sanicas: A Trailblazer in Global Health and Vaccinology

Dr. Melvin J. Sanicas, a native of Iloilo City, Philippines, has emerged as a leading figure in global health and vaccinology. His impressive journey from a curious student to a world-renowned medical expert is marked by extraordinary academic and professional achievements. On December 11, 2024, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., conferred the Pamana ng Pilipino Award during the Presidential Awards 

For Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas at the Malacañan Palace, recognizing his exceptional contributions. This prestigious award honors his dedication and achievements in advancing public health, solidifying his role as a leading figure in global medical innovation and advocacy. Dr. Sanicas graduated with a Biology degree from the University of the Philippines - Manila in 2001 and earned his Doctor of Medicine in 2006. His pursuit of advanced education led him to institutions such as the University of Leeds, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Harvard University, Università di Siena and the University of Geneva, culminating in expertise spanning vaccinology, infectious diseases, public policy, and business management.

Currently the International Medical Director for Screening at Exact Sciences, Dr. Sanicas leverages cutting-edge technologies in cancer diagnostics, including cancer genomics and machine learning. 

Previously, he contributed significantly to vaccine development, including COVID-19 and dengue vaccines, while holding leadership roles at Clover Biopharmaceuticals, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, and other global firms. 

He also spearheaded the Collaboration for Tuberculosis Vaccine Discovery (CTVD) at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, advancing tuberculosis vaccine research. Dr. Sanicas’s accolades include the prestigious TOYM Award for Science and Medicine and recognition as an internationally respected COVID-19 expert by the Philippine Senate. His TED- Ed videos and book Frontiers of COVID-19 have educated millions, while his social media presence and co-hosting of the Global Health Cast make complex health issues accessible worldwide.

Dr. Sanicas shares that he considers that the Pamana ng Pilipino Presidential Awardee is both a recognition and a privilege reminding him why he embarked on the journey of global health. 

“It motivates me to keep pushing boundaries and stay committed to finding solutions that can truly make a difference. I also hope that my experiences can inspire others, especially younger Filipinos who are still uncertain about pursuing a career in this field, to stay curious, keep learning, and follow their passion for making the world a healthier place,” said Dr. Sanicas.

As he pushes the boundaries of innovation and advocacy, Dr. Sanicas remains an inspiration to aspiring scientists and a beacon of excellence for Filipinos worldwide. His legacy is not just one of scientific achievement but of transformative impact on public health across the globe.
