For many Filipina women redefining wealth abroad, success is no longer measured only by income or visible status, but by stability, peace, legacy, and the ability to build a meaningful life.

“I’ve been broke many times trying to keep up with that image of success.”

Filipinos leave their homes in search of better opportunities- not just for themselves, but for the people they love. From sending money home for a family member’s education or parents’ healthcare, to helping build houses for the entire family, our definition of wealth often carries a deeper purpose. For many Filipinas living and working abroad, especially here in the US, not all wealth is measured only by the numbers in our bank accounts. While financial success abroad can bring stability, many us are also redefining what true wealth looks like and that money carries meaning that goes far beyond personal success.

I used to think wealth was about who had what-who drove the nicer car, who earned the bigger paycheck, and who seemed to be living the most instagrammable version of the “American dream”.

The pressure to match what everyone else seemed to have and the appearance of having it all together. From the outside, success looked like a competition, measured by visible milestones and material things but the farther I went on my journey as an immigrant and the slower I allowed myself to walk through it, something began to shift.

Being around people from different walks of life opened my eyes to different perspectives that I had never considered before. Those experiences forced me to pause and rethink what I was chasing in the first place. Instead of trying to keep up, I started asking deeper questions: Is what Im building safe? Will it last? Does it have meaning beyond today? That shift moved my definition of wealth away from appearances and toward something more grounded- safety, legacy and purpose. Real wealth, I realized, is not what you earn today, but about what you protect, what you grow, and what you leave behind for the people who matter most.

Building a life of real value

Just like money, energy and time are limited resources. Not everyone should have unlimited access to them. Filipina women abroad often carry a deep sense of warmth and openness. Many of us treat people we meet like family- and it’s hard to blame that instinct. When you are thousands of miles away from home, separated from the people who raised you and the community that shaped you, the longing for connection becomes stronger.

Over time, I began to understand something powerful, people should be filtered the same way we filter investments. we study investments carefully before committing to them. We ask if they are safe, if they have long-term value, and if they align with our goals. The same wisdom applies to the people we allow close to us. When you surround yourself with people who value growth, integrity, and purpose, you life begins to compound the best way. The right people protect your peace, challenge your thinking, and help you build something meaningful- not just something impressive on the surface.

All these experiences slowly led me to a new understanding of what wealth really means for many Filipina women abroad. It is no longer just about earning more, owning more, or proving that we have “made it”. The deeper definition of wealth is living in balance. Wealth today is no longer about chasing the most visible version of success. It is about creating a life where our work supports our values, our money serves a purpose, and the people around us help us grow. In that space, we begin to build not just income, but a more thoughtful life- one where ambition is balanced with wisdom, community is built with intention, and every step forward carries meaning beyond ourselves.

“We are no longer chasing proof that we’ve ‘made it’—we are building lives that matter.”
